This Old House

Ok, so this is more a request for help than a funny flash of brilliance. Our bebe's almost a year and I'm getting full nights of sleep and suddenly, I don't know what to do with myself. So, I have decided to embark on a redecoration project.

When we first moved into our home there were a few things that needed to be done right out of the shoot, our bedroom was not one of them. Three walls are a light puttyish brown with one wall a claret red, beigy carpet, white shutters and closets and nice white crown moulding.

Not colours I'd pick but passable enough to leave while we tended to more pressing decorating issues like repainting the beautifully tiled but horridly painted master bath. The bath was amazing but the previous owner had chosen to paint it a dark, iridescent, blue against a black and beige tile and dark cherrywood cabinetry. The blue was the colour of a teamster's custom bowling ball. So I am thinking about where I want to go with the bedroom because it doesn't feel like us and I'm stuck. We may add a closet for my husband in an area of dead wall space and I want to add some functionality with storage, and I know I want to get rid of the dated popcorn ceiling but as for the colour palette and what I want out of the room, I'm just not sure.

So here is what I'm looking for, a little inspiration. Give me some ideas, what's your favourite thing about your sleeping space and what would you change if you could? What's it missing, besides Johnny Depp sprawled across the bed? What can't you live without? There are no wrong answers because even if your ideas are a far stretch from my tastes, I promise it will get my creative juices flowing.

Thanks much, your pal,
Chris/ Formerly Fun.

I am no decorator per se but I will tell you that I like my bedroom like a cocoon, dark, quite, squishy. Good sheets, good pillows, nice lighting. For me at least, the less clutter the better because it makes the space more serene. Don't know if that helps but theres my 2 cents.

HAHAHAHA!! Our en-suite shower room is pretty much the colour of that bowling ball and I love it! Of course, it's teamed with plain dark blue tile and pink walls and pine and a white suite (it's 'pretty-pretty') so perhaps that makes it better? LOL!

As to the bedroom - mine is blonde wood, magnolia walls and white ceiling with biscuit coloured curtains and sealed pine board floor. Calm and peaceful.

And I do have Johnny Depp draped over my bed. If you go to my Other Half's blog at Yellowswordfish.com and look in the Movie People section for a post titled 'My wife sleeps with Johnny Depp', you'll see what I mean. ;)

Just to clarify, it's the wet wall part which is that colour.

I feel your pain! I've been decorating our house for a year, and still have not decided for sure what color to paint our bedroom (we're saving it for last). There are, currently, 5 different paint splotches on the wall, all that are.. ok. I finally bought a gallon of very neutral brown paint called "Lonesome Dove"... thinking then I could use beautifully painted furniture like Ikea has, a blue dry brushed bed, a red dry brushed armoire, you get it, rgiht? and then nice clean floor to ceiling white curtains. It is heavenly in my mind.

As for those popcorn ceilings, we used one of those really wide paint spakling tools (they are like 8 inches wide, I think) and scraped the popcorn off the ceiling, then painted. After a couple coats, it looks fabulous.

Whatever you do, Good luck!

I like using light colors and mirrors to open up space, even if they are small mirrors. Even changing light switch covers from the boring plastic ones to ceramic ones makes a difference (I don't mean those awful floral things, just plain ceramic).

It's the little things that make the difference.

I cannot live without my down comforter. It was a little pricey but it's cool in the summer and cozy int he winter.and if I could changes something I'd say surprisingly, the wood floors. I love them when we got the house(they're everywhere) but in the bedroom its kind of cold and I put down rugs but every time I vac floor or wipe, I have to move the rugs and they move on their own and its a pain. I'm seriously considering carpet.

As for colors, go find a comforter or duvet that you adore, it's one of the biggest things you have to look at all the time, and then build your color palette around that. Of course if you just pick a white blanket, it's going to be hard.
