Lesbians Make Me Cry

I am in some weepy, weird emotional state right now.

It started with the two lesbians Del Martin, 87 and Phyllis Lyon, 84 who finally got married after like 55 years together. They were the first couple married yesterday after the California State Supreme Court overruled a ban on same-sex marriages. They championed lesbian rights at a time when it was no doubt much more difficult being gay.

After all these years, when I'm certain they know who they are and what they mean to each other without the marriage certificate, they continued to press for it because it was a matter of equal rights. Even in their eighties, they are still committed to that. I'm getting weepy just writing about it.

Then Morgan Freeman sucker-punched me with this one.(bad quality but you get the picture)

Yes, a goddamn Visa commercial left me crying like a big, baby, bitch.

Then I watched an episode of Intervention about Hubert, a likeable Native American alcoholic. Hubert had a very fractured childhood and a family history of alcoholism. When his mother, with whom he was very close to, died, he fell apart and eventually became homeless. God, it finished me off, I was a puddle.

I'm not preggo or PMSing because I take like three packs of pills each day just to make extra sure. Given the amount of sleep we're getting right now and the stress of the routine of three kids, another bebe would be an accident on the scale of Chernobyl.

I'm not sure why I'm so emotional right now but it's a good thing that the recent arrivals from Netflix are Alien vs. Predator, The Mist and Cloverfield(hubs choices) and not the Kite Runner, Love in the Time Of Cholera or Grace is Gone(my choices), I don't think I could take it.

Stumble Upon Toolbar

The Visa commercial did that to me too! In the same vein, I always cry at the Garth Brooks video "Standing Outside the Fire". (Why was I watching a Garth Brooks video? Don't you judge me.) If you can watch that and not cry, you are DEAD inside! I don't think you're preggers, either. Sometimes, you just really need that kind of cry, and the media seems to conspire to help you. It's happened to me a couple of times, too. I rather enjoy it.

I am a mass of hormonal weepiness, extremely acerbated by the fact that we are going to have to put down our dog this week. I have been crying at the drop of a hat and all I can say is I hope these tears are really acting as the emotional "rainstorm" that I need right now to help me deal with things.

Cry all you want to, it's your party. It'll get better-

Me. Here. Right now. said... June 18, 2008 at 9:44 AM

Hi - I found you via Doc. As a lesbian, and a California, I was ecstatic to see that in the clearly waning days of their lives, they were able to finally say "I do." Well, excluding the time they said it in 2004 when Newsom declared he was not bound by California law. Rebels, love 'em.

During this month of Pride for "my people" I like to remember that there are many stories like Del & Phyllis - and lots of other stories in the making.

I'm running a series this weekend on lesbians and their relationships and hope you will find time to check it out. I think what you'll find is that we are just like most heterosexuals in our desire to carefully and thoughtfully seek out and maintain a healthy relationship.

prayingtodarwin-
I'm so judging you right now, Garth Brooks? Ok, I'll go watch the video and see for myself if I can resist the no doubt uplifting message. Ok, I just watched it, you're right. I always champion the underdog so it got me.

lisa-
If the Olympics do it to you, DON'T go watch the Garth Brooks video prayingtodarwin spoke of.

Chris-
Isn't that cool? I know a lot of people have a problem with it and I respect people's right to peacefully disagree but I also think it's important for heteros who support gay rights to be vocal about it. If nothing else, it balances the opinions of the religious right, and they're VERY vocal about it.

Melis-
Glad I'm not the only one.

Hahnathome-
I will definately check that out. Putting a face on gay relationships is a really pivotal way of affecting change.

I think there are so many people who would say they think it's wrong who when faced with an actual couple navigating the sometimes unsure waters of a relationship, would realize it's two people, like any other two people. What you're doing is very important, thanks.
